The following outlines are intended to provide a brief overview of real estate companies (or firms with significant real estate groups) providing potential employment opportunities for students. It is not a comprehensive list but probably covers 95% of the types of firms who would offer positions to students and who have typically hired KFBS students.

The first several types of companies listed have hired the majority of MBA students going into real estate. This is both a function of where the jobs are, and who recruits on campus.  Many companies have separate divisions that would fit under more than one of the categories below.  For instance, several of the investment banks (e.g.  Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers) have a real estate investment banking/agency group, as well as a separate principaling group/opportunity fund.  Similarly, some commercial banks, such as Citicorp or Chase, have a lending/workout group as well as an investment banking group.  Several real estate pension fund advisory firms, such as LaSalle or Heitman Capital Markets, have multiple divisions occupying various categories, such as pension fund advisory/acquisitions, asset management, real estate securities investment, investment banking/brokerage, etc.1

  • Wall Street Investment Banks
  • Private/Boutique Investment Banking/Advisory Firms
  • Commercial Banks/Thrift Institutions
  • Consulting/Advisory/Accounting Firms
  • Opportunity Funds/Distressed Asset Buyers/Private Investment Funds
  • Life Insurance Companies
  • Pension Fund Advisors/Investment Managers
  • REITs and Public Real Estate Companies
