 2008 Invitation-Only Development Case Competition

Kenan-Flagler hosted the 3rd Annual Real Estate Challenge case competition on Feb. 22.  This year, 15 teams from prestigious business schools from around the country converged on Kenan-Flagler to compete in the invitation-only 2008 challenge.

The UNC Real Estate Challenge case competition is the first business school case competition to focus solely on real estate development.  In the past, the case competition has challenged teams to hypothesize different uses for an actual site, devise a development program and site plan and work through project financials.   Participants were evaluated by leaders in the real estate industry from around the United States. Representing Kenan-Flagler this year were John Cerqueira, Matt Miller, Steven Sklad and Rob Steward, all second-year MBAs.

The schools that participated in this year’s challenge included:

Chicago School of Business

Columbia School of Business

Duke University (Fuqua)

Emory University (Goizueta)

New York University (Stern)

Northwestern University (Kellogg)

Rice University (Jones)

The University of California at Los Angeles (Anderson)

The University of Michigan (Ross)

The University of North Carolina (Kenan-Flagler)

The University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)

The University of Southern California (Marshall)

The University of Texas (McCombs)

The University of Virginia (Darden)

Vanderbilt University (Owen)

The case this year was written by Matt Seals [Kenan-Flagler MBA] and his team at BlackRock in London, UK and Professor David Hartzell.  Each team was judged on how well they supported their recommendations to the judges.  The judges had the unenviable task of evaluating each team relative to the other participants based on clarity, creativity and thoroughness of the answer. The case was a site in the Mayfair district of London UK.  Taking the top three prizes were University of Texas (McCombs), UCLA (Anderson) and Northwestern (Kellogg).

One of the elements of a successful competition is the depth and quality of the judges who take the time to be here and give their expertise to the student teams.  This year we had a great team of judges, and we want to publicly thank them for making our competition a success.

The judges represented the following comapines:

AvalonBay Communities, Bank of America, BioMed Realty Trust, Boston Properties, CIM Group, Colonial Properties Trust, DMB Associates, Edgemoor Development, Elm Street Development, Morningstar Properties, Prudential Real Estate, Transwestern Investment, Wood Partners.
